First details emerge of council’s plans to save £70m

Tower Hamlets Council has announced the first details of its plans to save approximately £70million over the next three years in its bid to meet the Government's reductions in council funding.

Following on from the £8m in-year savings announced last month, the council has started work on a seven-step transformation programme, outlining the approach it will take to achieve its ongoing savings target, while finding ways to improve and redesign the services it offers residents.

Lead Member for Resources, Cllr David Edgar said: “Like all public bodies, Tower Hamlets Council is facing huge changes and must find significant savings to meet the Coalition Government’s cuts.

“Facing these financial realities is a challenge. In response, Tower Hamlets Cabinet has outlined seven programmes to drive our savings forward and we’ll look at all areas of council spending through the perspective of these programmes.

“They primarily focus on creating a lean organisation with a streamlined structure, services and partnerships, while preserving vital frontline services and promoting the values that make Tower Hamlets a great place to live.

“Councillors are talking with residents as we’re out and about in the borough about the services people receive. I encourage people to get in touch with their local councillors to share their ideas and opinions.”

The Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review is set to be announced on 20 October, and will provide full details of the cuts expected from public services.
It is currently estimated that councils may have to cut anywhere between 25 and 40 per cent of their current budget.

Details of the projects that will come under the council’s seven efficiency programmes will then be put to Councillors during budget discussions in November and December.
A draft budget will be submitted to Cabinet in January 2011.
